The legacy of the Braman Winery & Brewery was born in 1835 when the promise of opportunity and prosperity compelled a penniless, 15 year old Irish farmer to risk everything and board a ship bound for Texas. With hope-filled eyes fixed on the horizon to the west, Thomas O’Connor left his family in Ireland to pursue his dream of building a new life in what would come to be known as the Lone Star State.

After settling near Refugio, duty called in 1836 and he joined like-minded lovers of freedom in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico. This teenage Irish Immigrant, the youngest soldier in the newly formed Texan Army, charged the Mexican Army on the battlefield of San Jacinto alongside Sam Houston and other rebellious pioneers- winning the Republic of Texas.

Thomas went on to plant his roots deep in the heart of Texas and laid the foundation for generations to come on a vast ranch in the South Central Plains. As a pioneer in cattle ranching, he proudly worked the land himself, teaching his children the principles that lead to success in the 28th state of the union. It was these values he personified that still drive the family today: Faith, Integrity, Strength, Risk Taking, and Self-Reliance. They would define generations of O’Connors to come, joining thousands of other Texas families including the Bramans, and build Texas into the greatest state in the nation.

Joe Braman, the great-great-great grandson of Thomas O’Connor, works the very land on which Thomas settled around Refugio. But it is his Texas values that drive Joe and his family to pursue their dream — to help you create your own Texas legacy. Drawing on successful endeavors in ranching, oil, championship rodeo riding and raising livestock, the Braman family is proud to share their Texas legacy in a new vision inspired by their Texan roots; providing beer and wine dedicated to the principles and hardworking people that define Texas.
